Girls U19 Team Sweeps Past Mexico to Move to 3-0 at 2023 Worlds
The U.S. Girls U19 National Team stayed unbeaten at the FIVB Girls U19 World Championship on Thursday with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-20) win over Mexico in Osijek, Croatia.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (August 5, 2023) – The U.S. Girls U19 National Team rebounded from a first-set loss to defeat Poland on Saturday 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-15) at the FIVB Girls U19 World Championship in Osijek, Croatia.
The U.S. (4-0) is in first place in Pool D and plays Serbia (1-3) at 9 a.m. PT on Sunday, Aug. 6.
The U.S. and Poland opened the first set cautiously, with neither team building a significant lead. Poland finally crept ahead at the end for the 25-23 win.
The loss fired up the U.S. players, however, and they returned to the court at the top of their game. In fact, the U.S. was never in serious trouble after set one, winning the last three sets, 25-16, 25-22, 25-15.
Opposite Abigail Mullen led all scorers with 18 points on 11 kills, one ace and six blocks. Outside hitter Teraya Sigler scored 16 points on 16 kills for a .325 hitting percentage, and middle blocker Ayden Ames had 12 points on 11 kills and an ace. She hit .474.
Five different players got in on the blocking game, as the U.S. led Poland in blocks (11-6) and kills (56-40). Poland had five aces to the Americans’ two.
Middle Favor Anyanwu had a pair of blocks to go with four kills and an ace. Outside hitter Abby Vander Wal scored 10 points on nine kills and a block. Setter Campbell Flynn scored four points on three kills and a block. Outside hitter Becca Kelley had two kills.
Libero Olivia Mauch led the team with 16 digs, and Sigler had seven successful receptions. Flynn and Charlie Fuerbringer set the team to a .328 hitting percentage.
There are 24 teams from around the world competing at the World Championship.
