COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 23, 2022) – The U.S. Boys U19 National Team upended Chile 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-11) on Monday in Guatemala in their first pool play match of the Boys’ U19 Pan American Cup, a qualifying tournament to the FIVB U19 World Championship.
The U.S. Boys led Chile in kills (40-20), blocks (7-0) and aces (10-0). The U.S. scored 31 points from opponent errors and limited their own to 19.
“I was really proud of our guys,” U.S. Head Coach Charlie Sullivan said. “They played together really well and they represented USA Volleyball really well, which is a priority of ours.”
Sullivan highlighted opposite Finn Kearney and setter Tread Rosenthal for their strong performances.
Kearney led all scorers with 19 points on a match-high eight aces, nine kills and two blocks. Rosenthal set the team to a .313 hitting efficiency.
Outside hitter Sterling Foley added 18 points on 14 kills, two blocks and two aces. Team captain Sean Kelly totaled 14 points on 14 kills.
“Even though we started out slow, we made sure to keep the same energy,” Kelly said. “Then we started picking up in the second set. The key for me was finding my rhythm with Tread. It took a little while. Some nerves kicked in in the first set.”
Middle blocker Kaumana Carreira scored five points, including a match-high three blocks.
Libero Kellen Larson was credited with six digs and six excellent receptions.
On Tuesday, United States (1-0) meets Costa Rica (0-1) at 1 p.m. PDT.
Matches will be streamed on Facebook Live at Fnvg Voleibol Guate except for all Guatemala’s matches that will be streamed exclusively on Facebook Live at Comité Olímpico Guatemalteco.
