COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (July 21, 2020) – Two coaches with ties to USA Volleyball will be inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame during the 2020 AVCA Convention on Dec. 16-19 in Omaha, Neb.
Stanford’s former associate head coach Denise Corlett and Pioneer Region Commissioner Ron Kordes are among the four people who will be inducted. The others are Rich Kern of RichKern.com and 37-year University of Tampa Head Coach Chris Catanach.
The AVCA is honoring Corlett for her 31 years as assistant coach, interim head coach, associate head coach and beach volleyball coach with Stanford volleyball. Corlett retired from coaching in January.
Corlett also served as team leader for the U.S. Women’s Junior National Teams in 2007-09, 2011 and 2013.
She served as the assistant coach for the 2003 U.S. Women’s Pan American Games Team, which won bronze, and has worked at the U.S. Women’s Open Tryouts for several years.
Corlett led her U.S. Volleyball Association (the former name of USA Volleyball) team to national championships in both 1978 and 1979, played for the United States in the 1979 University Games in Mexico City and played for the U.S. Women’s National Team in 1982 and 1983.
In 1995, Corlett was named the USAV Junior Outstanding Female Coach. She is the first career assistant coach to be inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame.
Kordes is being honored for his 32-year coaching career at Assumption High School in Kentucky. The AVCA has also honored him as High School Coach of the Year in 2012 and the Club Director of the Year in 2016.
He is also responsible for building the Ohio Valley Volleyball Center and established the Kentucky Indiana Volleyball Academy. He has coached four USAV girls junior national championship teams.
Kordes has been commissioner of the Pioneer Region in Kentucky since its inception in 1996. He was named the USOPC Development Coach of the Year in 2005.
