USA Volleyball is saddened to learn of the passing of Richard “Dick” Edwin Powell on May 27, 2021. He was 89.
Dick was a longtime member of the USA Volleyball family, along with his wife, Joan, who was the 2018 Harold T. Friermood “Frier” award winner.
Powell was born and raised in Kansas and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He later earned his bachelor’s degree from Ottawa University (Kansas) and master’s from Colorado College.
His teaching, coaching and administrative career spanned more than 40 years with positions at the YMCA, Ottawa and Colorado State University. In Colorado Springs, he started at Lincoln Elementary School, moving on to Palmer High School and then Mitchell and Coronado High School.
He later served as USA Volleyball’s director of USA Youth and Junior Olympic Development before returning to education. He retired from Fountain-Fort Carson High School as an administrator.
Powell had a great impact on the Colorado Springs community as a coach and leader. He will be dearly missed.
He’s survived by Joan, four children and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 11, at 2:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 219 Bijou Street in Colorado Springs.
