Four teams captured titles in the 13s age group July 3 at the 2021 USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship in Las Vegas.
Flyers 13 APX-Bill (Frisco, Texas/North Texas) recovered from two three-set losses in pool play to roar back and win 13 Open. All in all, the Flyers battled to three sets in five of their 10 matches, including their semifinal match against NKYVC 13-1 Tsunami (Wilder, Ky./Pioneer).
In the final, the Flyers downed MadFrog 13s N Green in two, 25-22, 25-22. Earlier in the tournament, head coach Bill Raitt said one of his setters suffered an injury, and they moved to a 5-1 with an undersized setter. Not only did the setter do great, the team persevered.
“This is one of the [most] special teams I’ve ever coached,” he said. “They believe in each other. We’re not the biggest, not the tallest, not the glamorous team. But we win, and they play as a team. … Winning a national championship at 13 Open is huge; can’t get any bigger than that. This is the biggest stage in the world for these kids.”
13 American
A special story unfolded in 13 American as McAllen Fierce National (McAllen, Texas/Lone Star), a one-team club, captured the title.
With just eight players, McAllen Fierce finished 10-1 and defeated SASVBC G 13-1 (Honolulu, Hawaii/Aloha) in the final, 25-22, 20-25, 15-13.
“To come out and represent on a big stage is just flat out amazing,” said head coach Jahziel Cano. “This experience has been one of a kind. I can’t describe it … they’re resilient, so mentally tough; they’re just all heart.”
13 National
WAVE 13 Tammy (Del Mar, Calif./SCVA) stormed through the division with an 11-0 record to capture the National title. They defeated SCVC 13 Roxy (Redondo Beach, Calif./SCVA) 25-13, 25-23 in the final.
