COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 8, 2019) – The U.S. Men’s Junior National Team couldn’t hold off a surge from Chile on Thursday and fell at the Under 21 Pan American Cup, 24-26, 17-25, 25-21, 26-24, 15-10 in Peru.

The U.S. cannot qualify for the 2019 U21 World Championship and will now battle for fifth place. On Friday, it will play Peru at 4 p.m. CT. The match will be shown on FloVolleyball.tv, a subscription service.

“We’re obviously disappointed we’re not playing for the bid,” U.S. Head Coach Spencer McLachlin said. “We got beaten by a better team who made some good adjustments. Hat’s off to Chile.”

Opposite Brett Wildman paced the U.S., scoring a match-high 26 points on a match-high 20 kills, two blocks and a match-high four aces. Middle blocker Daniel Matheney added 13 points, including three blocks. Outside hitter Ryan Wilcox scored 12 points, including 10 kills.

The U.S. led Chile in kills (53-45) and aces (9-5). Chile led in blocks (10-7) and had 37 errors as opposed to the United States’ 47.

Setter Taylor Ittner praised the work of his middle blockers.

“Our middles are doing a great job of being open and available,” Ittner said. “They were working hard every play to get up for me.”
