COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 12, 2019) – USA Volleyball will hold a standing Beach ParaVolley clinic on Sept. 28 on the shores of Hermosa Beach, California, in conjunction with the USA Volleyball Beach Open National Championships.
Standing Beach ParaVolley is a relatively new sport looking to make in-roads on the international landscape with a goal of becoming a part of the 2028 Paralympic Games when they come to Los Angeles. The sport has been gaining popularity where teams have been competing regularly in Asia/Oceania since 2007. The adapted standing Beach ParaVolley game is very similar to the beach volleyball game with the major difference being three players per side.
The free clinic runs from 9-10:30 a.m. PT on Hermosa Beach (1 Pier Avenue, north side of the pier). The clinic is open to any athlete of any age or ability. To register for the standing Beach ParaVolley clinic, click here.
Jon Aharoni and Michelle Goodall will lead the standing Beach ParaVolley clinic. Clinicians are current standing Beach ParaVolley athletes. Men’s players are Troy Benesh, Eric Duda and Dave Newkirk along with women’s players Whitney Dosty, Tia Edwards and Nicky Nieves will be court demonstrators and assist in the clinic.
The USA Beach ParaVolley athletes will play a demonstration match at 1 p.m. PT the same day and is open to the public. The players will hold a meet and greet on the sand immediately after the clinic and the demonstration match to answer questions.
On Sept. 29, the six Beach ParaVolley athletes will also participate as two teams in the coed division of the USA Volleyball Beach Open National Championships. To register to compete in the championship, click here.
USA Volleyball confirmed its designation as the official national federation for Beach ParaVolley this spring. USA Volleyball sent teams to the 2019 Pingtan Beach World Series Open in May and Americans claimed gold in the men’s event and silver in the women’s event.
